Yorkshire Children’s Charity is delighted to introduce our newest Ambassador Helen Fielding, best known as the creator of the fictional character Bridget Jones and a sequence of novels and films following the life and loves of Bridget.
Born in Morley, West Yorkshire on the outskirts of Leeds, Helen attended Wakefield Girls High School before starting her career as a renowned journalist at the BBC, the Telegraph and the Independent before her bestselling Bridget Jones novels made her a household name. She is executive producer of the hugely successful Bridget Jones film series starring Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth, with the highly anticipated fourth film recently being confirmed to commence filming in May.
We were delighted to invite Helen to speak at our 2023 Yorkshire Ladies Lunch fundraising event where she entertained guests with hilarious stories from her Yorkshire childhood as well as reflecting on her time spent creating the beloved Bridget.
“I am honoured to have been asked to be an Ambassador for Yorkshire Children’s Charity and am looking forward to joining them in their work to give all Yorkshire’s children a chance to experience a happier childhood.
I was shocked to learn that a third of all children in Yorkshire are now living in poverty. When I worked as journalist in East Africa I was used to talking about children who didn’t have food, access to proper healthcare schooling or shelter in Ethiopia or Sudan – but in Yorkshire? “It’s not right,” as my Mum would have said.
But Northern people are good at rolling up their sleeves and helping, which is exactly what the Yorkshire Children’s Charity is doing.”
Charlotte Farrington, Yorkshire Children’s Charity CEO, commented “We are absolutely delighted that Yorkshire’s very own Helen Fielding has come on board as an Ambassador, To have Helen wave the flag for the children of Yorkshire and our work is deeply humbling and an act of incredible kindness. We are extremely grateful to Helen for her support and know that together, we can continue to make a difference to the thousands of children at a disadvantage across our region, facing unimaginable challenges in these desperate times.”
Our Ambassadors and high profile supporters help raise awareness of our work and engage with people from across Yorkshire and beyond by using their platforms to support us, highlight our impact and bring attention to the issue of child poverty and disadvantage in Yorkshire.
