What is the Great Yorkshire Build?

Bringing the property sector together to help children in Yorkshire

The Great Yorkshire Build is a truly unique initiative bringing together the private, public and third sector in a one-of-a-kind partnership to refresh and re-energise SEND facilities in Yorkshire.

Working hand-in-hand with the Yorkshire property sector, we aim to set the bar for excellence in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities education provision across Yorkshire, creating a legacy that will benefit generations of children to come.

Thank you for investing in our children, in their futures, in our school

The impact of the build

Our first Great Yorkshire Build project took place at Brooklands School, Skipton. The Brooklands build has been transformative, with parents and teachers reporting that:

– Pupils are more interested, excited and engaged with learning

– There has been an increase in the school’s ability to deliver on children’s Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

– Pupils have a happier, more enjoyable experience at school.

– Pupils are safer and more comfortable in schools

– Parents and carers’ trust in the school has increased

– Teachers are re-energised and re-motivated

How we’re helping

The next Great Yorkshire Build project is taking place at Hilltop School, Rotherham, who were featured in the BBC’s ‘SEND Help’ documentary. The school supports 153 children and young people aged 2-19 with a range of complex needs.

Currently, the school is oversubscribed and teachers, staff and pupils struggle with cramped conditions, a severe lack of storage for wheelchairs and other equipment, issues with climate control and limited facilities for sensory activities, rebound therapy and other activities that can benefit children with SEND.

The next Great Yorkshire Build project, launching in 2024, will help Hilltop School to reimagine the space, creating facilities to help pupils and staff thrive in an environment they can be proud of.

How you can get involved

The Yorkshire property sector is full of generous people and organisations who give their services entirely pro-bono, simply because it is the right thing to do for our region’s disabled children and young people.

From design through to build, through donating your time, skills and materials you can be part of a unique partnership that changes lives and leaves an incredible legacy. This support does not go unrecognised, and is celebrated at the industry-leading, sell-out Yorkshires. Commercial Property Awards, attended by 1,000 professionals from across the sector.

“As a society and also a business, we have a responsibility to give to those people who are most in need within our society. The funding is not available from the government, and we know with the cost-of-living crisis, we have got to do more as businesses. We all have to join together, and it’s amazing what you can actually do when you come together.”

If you have skills that can make a difference, we’d love to hear from you!

The Great Yorkshire Build projects are often determined by the location of our partners and contractors. Therefore, we are unfortunately unable to accept applications from all schools. If you feel your school would benefit from a Great Yorkshire Build then get in touch and we’ll keep your details on file if we find a suitable contractor.
